Windows 8 relies a lot on gestures, which while very nice with a touchscreen, require a little getting used to with a mouse. To be honest, in my opinion, Windows 8 would be unusable with a slow mouse. With a fast mouse however, it merely requires a lot of moving around the screen. The increased movement will slow you down, but the improved menu layouts and speed of the operating system itself even the navigation times between 7 and 8 out.

Overall, I like Windows 8. Will I be replacing my existing 7 installs, no, I see no point in it. But I will be installing 8 on everything new until the next Windows provided it is decent as well comes out. Whether or not to buy 7 or 8 comes down to what you want out of your software and whether or not you are willing to accept change.

Overall Review: I purchased 3 copies of this OS for pc's I am building for my kids and Newegg had a great sale at the time. I buy a Windows OS and get free Mac software with it? The Newegg marketing team must have been eating Colorado's finest brownies that day.

DVD would not run. Addressing this issue, Newegg support directed me to a Microsoft support phone number. There I would be charged for a back-up copy as well as shipping. The total of this, combined with the Newegg purchase, will cost you more time and money than the worth of any pre-assumed gain. Overall Review: Install it, click on desktop, click on Internet Explorer, Google 'classic shell', download and install telling it to look and perform like Windows 7.

Now you can learn the tiled interface at your own speed and enjoy immediate use of your new OS. Why Windows makes it so difficult to auto jump to a friendly interface is beyond me. Tiles, ugh! Pros: There are some features intended for touch screens that do work well with the mouse. Poke-points or gestures that give you access to commonly used elements, like the control panel.

The important stuff Chrome, Steam, etc. Cons: This is not an OS for anyone that likes to be hands-on or multitask. For example, the default Skype program is an always full-screen application. You can still download the old version but many system configuration applications will always be full-screen only. The whole thing seems dumbed-down to work for the tablet crew. It sort of feels like Microsoft is telling me "Shh, you don't need to do that, here's a flashy animation and some primary colors to calm you down.

There are plenty of other little irritations too. Such as the lack of out of box DVD playback capability and the irritating game of hide and seek I have to play to find things that I could easily find in Windows 7 to name a few.

Pros: The improvements made to 8. Some things will still take getting used to. Cons: The lack of the classic Start Menu is still a little bothersome. It can be restored with 3rd party help.
